Little Rock Air Force Base's AFOSI Det. 327 was named the medium unit of the year for AFOSI's Region 3 recently. This award goes to the top unit with between six and 16 manning authorizations for a given year, based on their overall performance.

"I'm very proud of the performance of these men and women," said Col. Wil Urquhart, Region 3's commander. "I am also very proud of the efforts of their teammates. None of our award winners succeeded on their own."

Little Rock's special agents were credited with being a proactive detachment. They worked to identify civilian drug distributers and meth labs, "gift wrapping" evidence for local law enforcement and providing a safer community for military members and their civilian neighbors alike. They were also cited for uncovering more than tens of thousands of dollars in housing allowance fraud.

Among other cases the agents were responsible for identifying and investigating, Special Agent in Charge Dan Marion said they worked closely with local police departments to indentify the solicitation of minors for sex and child pornography. Their efforts ensured the offenders were dismissed from the Air Force immediately.

However, Mr. Marion was quick to point out the positive off-duty community involvement by his agents as well. He said his agents coached youth soccer and basketball for more than 100 children, lead a fundraiser to purchase toys for more than 300 families and donated more than $1,000 to benefit Heifer International - a charity that feeds local families in need.

"This is a class act of team players," Mr. Marion said. "The support they provide Team Little Rock and central Arkansas on a daily basis is simply outstanding."

The unit will go on to compete against other detachments of the same size for overall top Air Force honors later this year.
